Transport of charged particles in the plasma of an ECRIS

Abstract : In order to get high currents of multiply charged ions it is necessary to confine the electrons and ions in the plasma. The ionic currents correspond to the losses of the plasma. It is therefore of great interest to understand the transport mechanisms of both electrons and ions. In this paper we present measurements which bring valuable information on the confinement of charged particles in an ECRIS: the density and currents of electrons have been measured in the Quadrumafios source; on the other hand the density of highly charged (greater than 9+) argon ions have been measured in the Caprice source through X-ray spectroscopy. These results are presented and the confinement processes of these particles are discussed.
