PS Ions for LHC Project

The object is to co-ordinate the preparation of the PS machines for their future rôle as pre-injectors of lead and other ions for the LHC. The programme of new developments, adaptation/transformation of machines and machine experiments includes: Development of an improved ECR-source (PP Group in collaboration with outside laboratories). Development of a laser ion source as an alternative to the ECR (PP Group in collaboration with outside laboratories). Improvement of Linac 3, maybe its move into the South Hall to facilitate injection to LEIR (PP and AE Groups). The LEIR project. (AE Group). A new transfer line and a new injection into the PS (AE and PO Groups). Adaptation of the PS (vacuum, RF, etc.) (AE, RF, PO Groups). Adaptation of the PS-SPS transfer line including a new low beta stripping insertion (AE, PO Groups). Present planning calls for first lead ions in the LHC in the March 2007. Then all the PS machines should be ready to provide the extremely low emittance lead beam by early 2006.
