Study Group for a 2 GeV Superconducting Proton Linac (SPL) Project

A 2.2 GeV Superconductiung Proton Linac (SPL) is being studied, which will re-use a large fraction of the decommissioned RF equipment from LEP. Delivering an H- beam of 4 MW at a 75 (50) Hz rate, it is proposed as the source for a proton driver of a Neutrino Factory. This machine could become the injector of the PS, bringing the PS complex to new levels of performance and opening new opportunities for physics, like at an ISOLDE-type facility of the second generation. Studies and developments, in close collaboration with outside institutes and laboratories, are at present concentrated on the low energy part of the SPL (below 400 MeV kinetic), where the LEP equipment cannot be efficiently used.
