Ion Heating Experiments in the Afterglow of an ECR Ion Source

In a recent paper [1] we investigated the influence of selective ion heating on amplitude and decay time of the afterglow pulse via computer simulations. In our model we considered an enhanced transport of the heated ion species. The afterglow peak was increased in amplitude and compressed in time, i.e. higher duty factors seemed possible.

Here we report our first experimental results on selective minority-ion heating in the afterglow mode of ECRIS III installed at KVI, Groningen. The discharge was run in mixtures of Ar/3He and 3He/He, respectively. In contrast to our simulations, selective heating of high charge states of e.g. Ar results in an instantaneous destruction of the afterglow peak. This result shows that further effects come into play, which were not considered in our theoretical model.
