Activities

The group is responsible for most of CERN's particle sources: the proton Linac 2 with its duoplasmatron source and Radio-Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) pre-injector; the heavy ion Linac 3 which is fed by an Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) source; the photocathodes and lasers producing short electron bunches for CLIC and CTF; the target-ion source front-ends generating radio-active isotopes for ISOLDE experimenters. The rôle of Linac 3 for providing LHC with various heavy ions is being investigated, including possible improvements of the ECR source and a feasibility study of a Laser Ion Source. PP is also the home of an R&D initiative on the generation of neutrino beams in a muon storage ring (NuFact).
